The Dakar in mourning

Before the start of the 2024 edition, the Dakar mourns René Metge, three-time winner of the event, of which he then became organizer. He was 82 years old.

He is a Dakar figure who has passed away. René Metge died this Wednesday at the age of 82, and his disappearance aroused great emotion in the bivouac of the famous rally-raid, the start of the edition of which will be given on Friday.

After starting out in motorcycles, René Metge switched to motorsport, notably competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times. He then turned to the Dakar, before falling in love. “Africa was love at first sight, he said, in comments recounted by L’Equipe I immediately felt something strong, this continent brought me a lot and responded to my desire for adventure. It was an eye-opener. »

Johnny’s co-pilot in 2002

Winner in 1981 with Range Rover, René Metge brought Porsche to the Dakar and won two other times, with the German manufacturer, in 1984 and 1986. After the tragic death that year of Thierry Sabine, the native of Montrouge took over as race director for two years, in 1987 and 1988. He then began organizing several races around the world.

René Metge made a brief return to the Dakar in 2002, during a fairly memorable episode. It was he who was Johnny Hallyday’s co-driver when the singer attempted the rally-raid adventure. One more story to tell for someone who was a figure in the Dakar.
