TF1, the very big controversy

The choice of the first channel to broadcast the French team’s match on a delayed basis following the dissolution of the National Assembly sparked very strong reactions.

This is unheard of for over thirty years. For the first time since 1994, a French team match was not broadcast live on Sunday. The Blues’ last Euro preparation meeting against Canada was indeed broadcast with a quarter of an hour delay. Consequence of Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly following the results of the European elections, the first channel favoring political news.

TF1 had therefore not made such an affront to the Blues since a match against Australia on May 26, 1994. While the match kicked off at 12:00 p.m. French time, the first channel had decided to broadcast the meeting at 2:25 p.m. This time, it was only a fifteen minute delay but in the age of the Internet, the choice generated a lively controversy. And all the more so in view of certain comments made on TF1.

“We’re not going to bother with a friendly match”

“We are not going to bother with a friendly match while there is dissolution…” said a member of the editorial staff, according to The Parisiananother headline executive explaining: “News always comes first. And there, the main news is obviously the dissolution. So it’s normal to inform viewers. The mistake would have been not to do so. »

The first channel had, however, obtained for several weeks from the French Football Federation that the kick-off would only be given at 9:15 p.m. instead of 9:00 p.m., but the announcement of the dissolution changed the situation. To the point of forcing Gilles Boulleau, presenter of the political program preceding the broadcast, to announce that the match would be broadcast on a delayed basis, from 9:30 p.m. while a banner simply indicated that the match was coming soon. .

The choice of TF1 was not to the taste of football fans. And all the more so since the front page ran its usual advertising breaks instead of taking advantage of half-time to go live again.
