Spanish GP: Norris the fastest

This Friday, at the start of the afternoon, the Briton Lando Norris (McLaren) set the best time in the first free practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris was the fastest. This Friday, at the start of the afternoon, the Briton set, on soft tires, the best time of the first free practice session of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Spain, in 1’14″228, on the side from Barcelona to Catalonia. The driver of the McLaren team was ahead, by only 24 thousandths, of the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), also on soft tires, while Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), with his medium tires, at home, took third place, three tenths behind the Briton.

However, the Spaniard was not spared from warnings regarding his engine and even complained of a certain lack of power. This had forced him, at a certain point, to return to the garage, to allow more in-depth checks on his Ferrari by his mechanics. Despite everything, no failure was detected.

Ocon in the top 10

Behind this leading trio, the top 10 was completed by the Briton George Russell (Mercedes), the Mexican Sergio Perez (Red Bull), the Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren), the Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), the Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine), the Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and the Thai Alexander Albon (Williams). Alonso, forced to stay in the garage for a while at the start of the session, then lost a piece of his wing during effort, which led to the red flag and a short interruption of the session.

Behind, in 13th place, we find the Frenchman Pierre Gasly (Alpine). Finally, at the wheel of a Haas, the Briton Oliver Bearman, usual reserve driver of this same team, finished in 19th and penultimate place, he who was participating in his second free practice session since the start of this 2024 season, after settling into Nico Hülkenberg’s VF-24. The German will return to his Haas this Friday afternoon, at 5:00 p.m., for the second free practice session of this Grand Prix.
