Ocon replaced by Doohan (temporarily)

This Friday, during the first free practice session of the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix, Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine) will be replaced by Australian Jack Doohan.

Esteban Ocon will have to wait before finding his car again. Indeed, this Friday, on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit located near Montreal, the Frenchman will be replaced, at the wheel of his Alpine number 31, by the Australian Jack Doohan, usual third driver of this same French team, at the occasion of the first free practice session of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. This replacement will take place within the framework of compulsory sessions for novice drivers. During each Formula 1 season, each team is supposed to assign them to drivers who have no experience in the discipline.

The announcement of this replacement comes a few days after the affair involving Esteban Ocon during the Monaco Grand Prix. This famous affair caused a lot of noise, particularly within the Alpine team, which decided to part ways with its French driver at the end of this current exercise. During the very first lap of this Monaco Grand Prix, Ocon was guilty of a far too daring overtaking attempt on his compatriot and own teammate, Pierre Gasly.

Ocon could have been deprived of the Canadian GP

Initially, the idea of depriving Ocon of the entirety of this race weekend on the Canadian side would have been more than considered by the management of Alpine itself. This decision was ultimately not applied, on the advice of the legal services of this same team, in order to avoid any possible problem, as recalled The team.

In comments reported by the French sports daily, Australian Jack Doohan, now only 21 years old and son of motorcycle champion Mick Doohan, reacted to the announcement of his participation in this next session: “It will be my first time on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit and I can’t wait. I’m grateful to the team for giving me this opportunity early in the season. This will particularly help me with simulator work before the other European rounds. »
