Marquez, the following season

Marquez, the following season

After eleven seasons marked by six Moto GP world championship titles with Honda, Marc Marquez and the Japanese team have decided to part ways one year from the end of his contract. The Spaniard is starting a new adventure in 2024 with Ducati Gresini.

We had become accustomed to seeing the tightrope walker raise his arms on his orange, red and white motorcycle flanked by No. 93. Exactly 59 times which made him one of the legends of Moto GP. In 2023, Marc Marquez rode for the last time in the colors of Honda Repsol. This announcement, made official on October 4, was a real earthquake in the world of the premier category as the two were so closely linked.

The Japanese team had succeeded, in 2013, in designing a machine calibrated to the millimeter for the Spaniard. And he had paid him back with his six world championship titles, 59 victories, 101 podiums and 64 pole positions. Between 2016 and 2019, the native of Cervera was even almost unbeatable before the machine seized up in 2020.

While the season starts late due to Covid, Marc Marquez first shoots straight into a corner at Jerez for the launch of the 2020 financial year before making a crazy comeback and then falling. Apparently trivial, this incident ultimately caused him to fracture his right humerus. And while he tried to get back on his bike the following week, the No. 93 suffered an even more serious injury and ended his season in the second race. If the future ex-Honda driver is absent during the first two events in 2021, he manages to show good things and signs three victories (Germany, Grand Prix of the Americas and Emilia-Romagna). For the record, Alex Marquez’s older brother falls twenty-two times in fourteen races all the same.

Diplopia and signature in Gresini

In 2022 it’s still not that for the Spaniard. Despite an inaugural fifth place in Qatar, four crashes during the Indonesian Grand Prix landed him in hospital where he was declared unfit for the race. Then the Honda driver was diagnosed with diplopia (perception of two images of a single object) which deprived him of the following GP in Argentina. If he then participated in a few races, each time finishing in the Top 10, the No. 93 had to have re-operation on his right humerus, which once again marred his season. As in the previous three years, relations between Honda Repsol and Marc Marquez become more strained each time.

Between a Honda RC213V that is undriveable, capricious and capable of anything every time you throttle back up and a Marc Marquez, not at the top physically and generally too offensive in the race, the alchemy is hard to come by. 14th (out of 31) in the 2023 season in the general classification, the No. 93 has only experienced the joy of a podium once, it was in Japan (3rd). For the rest, the season was a long journey and it is for this reason that the two parties, initially linked until the end of 2024, decided to stop there.
