France Télévisions will abandon the Dakar

Broadcaster of the Dakar for many years, the France Télévisions group has chosen to reduce its coverage of the event during the 2024 and 2025 editions before stopping its commitment from 2026.

A page will be turned on the Dakar. The rally-raid launched by Thierry Sabine in 1978, organized in Africa until 2007 before settling in South America then more recently in Saudi Arabia, has long benefited from media exposure on the group’s channels France Televisions. However, this commitment will evolve from the 2024 edition.

« As part of its editorial strategy, the group has chosen to concentrate coverage of the Dakar Rally on the France 3 channel from January 2024.with the daily meeting ‘All sport – Dakar’, every day at 8:00 p.m., throughout the duration of the event”, confirmed the public audiovisual group in a press release sent this Friday to theAFP. A communication which comes shortly after the publication by the daily The Parisian of an article reporting the disengagement of France Televisions of the Dakar. According to this article, the decision was taken to the great dismay of the teams preparing to cover the event for several months.

The Dakar was not included in the ASO-France Télévisions agreement

The latter learned that “the sails would be significantly reduced for the next two editions” in order to save money. “ Only a handful of special correspondents will be mobilized this winter to report on short stories using images. », added The Parisian. While the public audiovisual service offered three programs per day covering Dakar news, this will be reduced to a single short magazine at the start of the evening then, “ from 2026”, the rally-raid will disappear from the air permanently.

An announcement that could be anticipated because, last July, Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) announced an extension of its partnership with France Televisions over the period 2026-2030 for the broadcast of sporting events organized by the company. If cycling races such as the Tour de France, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège or even Paris-Nice were concerned alongside the Paris Marathon, this was not the case for the Dakar. ASO will now have to find a new free-to-air broadcaster for the Dakar alongsideEurosportwho has entered the entire world rally raid championship.
