France Pierron, the incomprehensible separation

France Pierron let out a big rant. The journalist from the L’Équipe channel does not understand the separation between Nasser al-Attiyah and his co-pilot, Mathieu Baumel.

For fifteen days, the 2024 Dakar Rally once again kept motorsport lovers in suspense. Organized for the fifth time in Saudi Arabia, the race was this time won by Carlos Sainz in the cars category, while Sébastien Loeb placed third ahead of another French driver, Guerlain Chicherit. Five-time winner of the event, Nasser al-Attiyah, on the other hand, disappointed. The Qatari decided ten days later to part ways with his co-driver, Mathieu Baumel. An announcement which particularly annoyed France Pierron.

Present in Saudi Arabia to follow this 2024 editionthe channel’s journalist The Team made a rather annoyed and stinging outing towards Al-Attiyah. “ I find it difficult to understand, even if it is not uncommon in the automobile industry, for a driver to separate from his co-pilot. This separation goes badly, in substance and form. This sentence from Nasser al-Attiyah’s press release makes no sense to me: ‘It didn’t really work the way I wanted with Mathieu‘. Mathieu and Nasser, it’s still ten years of Dakar for four victories together, four second places (…), so to say that it didn’t work, I find it hard to hear. »

A whim ?

Visibly taken aback by the decision of the Qatari pilot, France Pierron continued: “ This year they had to give up. Nasser blamed everything on the car. Now, he is attacking his co-pilot who frankly hasn’t made too many navigation errors a priori. It looks like he’s trying to blow a fuse. It seems a bit like a whim. Was Mathieu taking up too much space? He is French, he is popular, he expresses himself well. Nasser too, that’s not the problem, but maybe he took the spotlight a little more and put Nasser in the shadows? (…) I find it a shame as the end of the journey between the two. »
