Fourmaux in the middle of a dream

Fourmaux in the middle of a dream

Once again on the podium (3rd), this weekend in Kenya, a month after his third place already in Sweden, Adrien Fourmaux (28 years old) admits that he did not expect to make such a start to the season, he who is making his full-time return to the WRC this year.

Adrien Fourmaux had already defied all predictions by taking the podium at the Swedish Rally last month. “Where it’s very complicated and driving on snow, we don’t do it very often”, to use the words of the person concerned. The hardest part was to confirm during the following round, this weekend in Kenya (third stage of the WRC world championship season). The 28-year-old French driver, definitely very surprising, achieved this in an almost equally astonishing way by finishing third again at the wheel of his Ford Puma, behind Kalle Rovanperä and the Japanese Katsuta. “I am so satisfied. I have to thank the team because we had no problems with the car. I’m really happy with their work. They deserve this podium,” rejoiced the Northerner, who did not expect such a start to the season, especially for his return to the elite full-time after a year at the lower level.

“I’m very happy with my start to the season, it’s a very good start to the season, it’s beyond our objectives at the start of the year, we were counting on a podium much later in the season,” had confessed Fourmaux as part of the program “Tout le Sport” on France 3 a few days before signing this new fabulous performance, in Africa. And the former medical student at the University of Lille, who in 2018 became French junior rally champion at the same time, dives back into those younger years during this same broadcast, “ten years ago”, when he already participated in the Monte-Carlo rally, but only “on the side of the road as a spectator”, “watching Sébastien Loeb and Ogier pass”, against whom he now fights.

Fourmaux also on the podium in the provisional general classification

“That’s what’s great,” admits the one who “(dreamed) of one day being on the other side”, and who is there now. “After four and a half years of rallying, I found myself at the highest level, it’s extremely satisfying. » A meteoric rise all the more unique because it started on a whim. “I was tempted by the crazy idea of trying “youth rally”, I paid twenty euros to register, I had five victories in five races, I am champion, and that propels me into 2019 in the world rally championship in the WRC2 category.

Today, it is in the WRC, the premier category, that Fourmaux shines. And something tells us that this is only the beginning for the surprising Northerner, third in the general classification fifteen points behind Elfyn Evans and 21 behind leader Thierry Neuville before trying in Croatia in two weeks to score a third podium in a row . If this is the case, we can no longer speak of a surprise. And Fourmaux really takes over officially from Loeb and Ogier.
