For L1, you will still have to put your hand in your wallet

Following Ligue 1 from next season will not be without consequences for your wallet. Explanations.

The TV rights of League 1 for the period 2024-2029 have still not found a buyer at this time. Less than three months before the launch of the next season, the Professional Football League (LFP) is continuing its over-the-counter negotiations with potential broadcasters to find a solution. The hottest trend seems to point to beIN Sports as savior, with a deal announced at 700 million euros annually for the French rights alone.

On this account, Ligue 1 and its players would be doing rather well given past events. But doubt remains as to the contours of the agreement thus projected. For a long time, the Qatari group imagined extending its collaboration with Canal+, which pays it some 250 million euros each year to distribute its channels; only Maxime Saada’s lack of enthusiasm on the subject forced beIN to think of a plan B.

One more subscription to plan

In order to best amortize its investment, the group dear to Nasser Al-Khelaïfi would work on the creation and publishing of a new channel dedicated entirely to Ligue 1, excluding the current bouquet. Following the French championship via beIN Sports would therefore require a new subscription. With for Qataris the possibility of breaking away from Canal+ to negotiate directly with internet service providers such as Free, Orange, SFR and Bouygues.

And Amazon in all this? The American giant remains on the lookout according to RMC, which reports a certain interest in the opening poster of the L1 days, on Friday evening. For this unique meeting, Amazon could agree to an envelope of between 80 and 100 million euros per year. The retransmission of this match via the sole subscription to the Prime option would be considered, but the price of the latter, currently 6.99 euros per month (or 69.90 per year), will certainly be revised upwards in that case.
